Pauline Anheluk, 90, formerly of Dickinson, died Wednesday, December 25, 2013 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Pauline’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Shannon Lucht as the celebrant. Interment will take place in the Spring at the St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a rosary & vigil at 4 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, and will continue on Thursday one hour prior to services at the church.
Pauline Miller was born July 30, 1923 on the family farm northwest of Dickinson, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Kubischta) Miller. She attended a one room rural school, then St. Joseph’s in Dickinson.
She was a fry cook and waitress at Frankie’s Sandwich Shop in Dickinson, where she first met Matt. She moved to Portland, Ore., in 1943 where she worked night shift in the shipyards as a welder, and part time as a waitress at the Chinese Garden Club. During these same three years, her sweetheart, Matt Anheluk, served in the US Army in the European Theatre in WWII. Pauline and Matt were united in marriage on July 15, 1946 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson. They moved to Beach where she worked at the Park Café and Matt worked at Red Owl Grocery, and then for Culp Truck Line. They returned to the Queen City in 1947 where Pauline worked as a cooks helper and waitress for weddings and banquets at the Elks, Eagles, and KC Club. From 1956 to 1979, Pauline worked the night shift as a Nurses Aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Matt and Pauline had four sons, Rodney, Roger, Richard and Robert. Their sons attended the Dickinson Catholic Schools. Pauline enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge. She was an aggressive and competitive Bridge player. She served as a Eucharistic Minister at Queen of Peace. She and Matt loved to dance polkas and waltzes. They also enjoyed square dancing and the many Elevator related conventions and trips. Pauline had a caring heart and a listening ear for the lonely or anyone who came to her with their struggles.
Following Matt’s death on April 12, 1997, Pauline remained in her home until her move to the Country House in Dickinson in February 2008. She then moved to the Wishek Nursing Home in July 2008 and then to Missouri Slope in April 2009.
Pauline is survived by her sons, daughter-in-law and one grandchild, Rodney (Rita) Anheluk and their daughter, Corey, Bismarck, Richard Anheluk, Hebron, Roger and Robert Anheluk, Dickinson; brothers, George (Evelyn) Miller, and Mike Miller, Dickinson; and brother-in-law, Bob Otto, Los Osos, Calif. Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Matt; her parents; brothers and sisters and their spouses, Joseph and Edith Miller, Jack and Veronica Miller, Thresia and Jacob Kainz, Rose Otto; sisters-in-law, Betty and Irene Miller; and infant sister, Elizabeth Miller. She will be missed by her dear friend and most faithful former neighbor, Marie Kaiser, now of Park Rapids, Minn.
