Robert F. “Bob” Curn, 90, Dickinson, died Sunday, November 16, 2008 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Bob’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 29, 2008 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fr. Todd Kreitinger as the celebrant. Inurnment will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
Robert Francis Curn was born May 20, 1918 at Elma, Iowa the son of Samuel and Gertrude (Biwer) Curn. He was raised in Dickinson where he attended St. Patrick’s Grade School and graduated from Dickinson High School. During his junior and senior years in high school, Bob worked as a life guard at Whitney Pool in Dickinson. Following graduation he worked for Western Union Telegraph at Dickinson and then moved to San Francisco, Calif. where he worked for Postal Telegraph. He remained in San Francisco until the attack on Pearl Harbor at which time he returned to Dickinson and having served in the U.S. Signal Corps during WWII. He worked mostly for the Federal Aviation Agency in Dickinson and following a career that spanned 40 years he retired from the FAA.
Robert married Viola “Vi” Huncovsky on May 13, 1940 in King City, Calif. Bob belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the Elks and Toastmasters. He started bowling after the first bowling alley opened in Dickinson. He was an active member of the bowling organizations both locally and on the state level. He had dedicated many years of service as secretary of Dickinson YABA, years of service to the North Dakota State Bowling Assoc., having been president 1978-79, and 1988-89. He was elected to the Dickinson Hall of Fame and the State Hall of Fame, was a league secretary for 35 years, and was on the Board of Directors for men’s bowling for many years. He was able to continue bowling until entering the nursing home. Bob also enjoyed golf, upland game hunting, fishing, swimming, traveling and especially being with his family.
Bob is survived by his wife, Vi; their three sons, Ted (Judith), Olathe, Kan., Barry (Suzanne), Kennewick, Wash., and Robert A. (Germaine), Dickinson; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Theodore “Ted”; and his sister, Marian Stow.
